Asbury Place
For Christmas 2008 Pappy's and their fabulous customers hoped to donate 12
lap sized quilts to Senior Citizens living at Asbury Place in Maryville.
The Asbury staff chose the residents that need us the most - those who have
outlived their families or have no family to visit.
Because of scheduling conflicts we were not able to deliver the quilts to
Asbury until January 1. I initially thought that was a bad thing because
we wanted to do it for Christmas, but after our January 1 visit, I'm so glad it
was delayed. This will now become an annual tradition for us.
We (Shawn, Sophie (4 years old), Courtney, Rick and myself) arrived at 11
a.m. We were led through the wings to the rooms of the individuals who had
been chosen to receive the quilts. Some were so happy they cried because
we had brought them quilts - that is one of the best feelings I have ever had.
Here are photos we took. For privacy sake, we are listing first names
only.
-
Sophie (with an electric hair day) and her Mom, Shawn, made more than 40 hanky
holders and handed them out to the residents. They loved seeing Sophie and
Sophie was absolutely amazing with them.
- Norma
- Ester (Can you believe she is 104! Amazing.) We would also like to thank
Lisa Goodlander from Okeana, Ohio. Lisa and her husband read on the
website that we were doing this and dropped this quilt top off while here on
vacation. Thank you Lisa - Ester was so happy to receive your quilt.
- Clarence (This quilt was made by Courtney, a 16 year old junior in high
school. We requested a veteran receive this quilt and Clarence was the
lucky man. Clarence was in the infantry and marched all over Italy.
Thank you Clarence and all veterans for everything you have done for us.
Without you we would not live free today.)
- Thelma - love the hat. Reminds me of the poem "When I am old I shall
wear purple."
- Alene
- Ann
- Lula (with Courtney) - Lula was once Ms. Chattanooga
- Rose
- Sam
- Billy
- Lula - she couldn't believe we knew red was her favorite color
- Cricket
- Naomi - she just couldn't believe somebody who did not know her made a quilt
for her.
This lady did not receive a quilt and, unfortunately I did not get her name, but
she wanted her photo taken. She was just sooo cute that I couldn't say no.
This is Annie. She was also not on the list to receive a blanket this time
around, but I just absolutely loved her and loved watching the staff interact so
tenderly with her that we went back to the shop and made a quilt for her baby.
Annie we hope your baby enjoys the quilt.
We are more than willing to accept donations of fabric, batting, orphan blocks,
quilting and binding. You may also make quilts on your own and drop them
off at the Shop.
Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated. We would like to try to
do this again maybe in July and will, definitely, do this again January 1, 2010.
